1:4 chairs

During a residency in Parsboro, Nova Scotia, I created a series of seven 1:4 chairs. My process began with sketching on the river’s edge. While iterating concept designs, I drew inspiration from the smelt running upstream. This inspiration translated to the chair's back and shoulders.

Materials: maple veneer, basswood, aluminum.

chair back carving

My design process for the chair backs started from rough sketches and then as fast as possible moved into design through making. Before starting my residency, I created multiple blank wooden pieces that I used to carve. I iterated on the shoulders of the material through quick plastine models, then selected the ones I favoured for the balsa wood blanks.

metal bending

For the metal components, I started by bending the metal by hand and experimenting with different ways to connect them to the chair seat. I also iterated on how the metal interacts at the bend, whether it's a mitered, bent, or merged transition. Once I settled on a form that I enjoyed, I created templates for bending and used a jig to bend the aluminum around a tight radius accurately.
